Varvara Snegiryov is Captain Snegiryov's sharp-tongued daughter, standing by the window when Alyosha first visits the family. She is poor but neatly dressed, clever, disdainful, and quick to rebuke her father's buffoonery when it humiliates the household. Her anger reads as both pride and exhaustion.

The captain explains that Varvara had earned and saved money for her studies in Petersburg, but the family has had to live on it. He calls her overworked, clever, and trapped by the household's need.
