Zossima's Cell Scandal

Also known as scandalous scene, this scandalous scene, the disturbance, unseemly farce.

Zossima's cell scandal is the public quarrel that erupts when Dmitri arrives at the monastery meeting. Fyodor Pavlovitch uses the setting to accuse his son over money, Katerina Ivanovna, Grushenka, and Captain Snegiryov, while Dmitri answers with his own charges against his father. The scene turns a hoped-for family settlement into an exposure before monks, relatives, and guests.

II-VIII. The Scandalous Scene

At the Father Superior's dinner, Miusov tries to apologize for the earlier disturbance, but Fyodor Pavlovitch's behavior keeps the monastery visit from recovering its decorum.
