Person
James Desmond
Also known as Mr. James Desmond.
An elderly clergyman of Westmoreland, of venerable appearance and saintly life, named by Dr. Mortimer as the distant cousin who would inherit the entailed estate should anything befall Sir Henry, since Rodger Baskerville is said to have died unmarried. He once visited Sir Charles and refused every settlement pressed upon him, a man of such simple tastes that Mortimer marvels he should stand heir to the Baskerville thousands.
Chapter VI. Baskerville Hall
Holmes makes his own inquiries and is satisfied that this amiable old gentleman, the next heir after Sir Henry, has no hand in the persecution, and eliminates him entirely from the list of suspects.
