The Margin

Place

London

The city where Sherlock Holmes keeps his consulting practice in Baker Street and where Dr. Mortimer trained as a young house-surgeon at Charing Cross Hospital. It is the bustling capital from which the case is first viewed, before any thought of Devonshire.

Chapter II. The Curse of the Baskervilles

It is the city Sir Charles had meant to travel to the very day after the night he died.

Chapter III. The Problem

Holmes argues that if the danger were truly supernatural it could reach a Baskerville as easily here as on Dartmoor.

Chapter IV. Sir Henry Baskerville

Sir Henry, newly arrived, is found to be secretly shadowed through the streets by a watcher riding in a hansom cab.

Chapter V. Three Broken Threads

Amid the millions of the city Holmes can discover neither who is dogging the baronet nor why, and confesses himself checkmated.

Chapter XII. Death on the Moor

Holmes reveals that it was Stapleton who shadowed their party by cab through the London streets.

Chapter XIII. Fixing the Nets

Holmes pretends that he and Watson must return to town on urgent business, a feint to disarm the Stapletons.

Chapter XV. A Retrospection

It emerges that Stapleton had lodged with his wife at a private hotel in Craven Street and first tried to reach Sir Henry there.
