Calling on Elizabeth at the Hunsford parsonage, Mr. Darcy astonishes her by declaring that he loves her against all his better judgement, dwelling on the inferiority of her connections even as he proposes. Stung on her sister's behalf and believing the worst of him over Mr. Wickham, Elizabeth refuses him with real anger.
