Person

Andrey

Also known as the driver Andrey.

Andrey is the driver waiting with three horses outside Plotnikov's shop to take Dmitri to Mokroe. He knows the road and judges how much of a lead Grushenka's carriage has. His readiness matters because Dmitri is trying to overtake the night itself.

On the road, Andrey drives at full speed while Dmitri speaks wildly about making way and punishing himself. The driver answers with simple religious talk and grows afraid of the strange passenger behind him.

VIII-VI. “I Am Coming, Too!”

At Mokroe, Dmitri tries to reward Andrey lavishly for vodka and readiness. Andrey accepts only a small extra sum, asking witnesses to remember that he refused the larger gift.
