After Katerina's fortunes change in Moscow, she sends Dmitri the money he once gave her and then a letter offering to be his wife. Dmitri answers emotionally, brings Ivan into the story, and is formally betrothed to her with ceremony and icons. By this first horizon, the engagement already stands under strain because Dmitri believes he is unworthy of her and is consumed by his passion for Grushenka.
III-X. Both Together
Katerina still treats the bond as a task of rescue, insisting that she knows Dmitri's shame over the three thousand roubles and wants him to understand that she is his truest friend.
III-XI. Another Reputation Ruined
After Grushenka's insult, Dmitri sees more clearly how Katerina's pride and generosity can become defiance, and he accepts that he has made her earlier sacrifice public.
IX-VII. Mitya’s Great Secret. Received With Hisses
During the inquiry at Mokroe, Dmitri calls Katerina formerly his betrothed while explaining that the entrusted money is part of the disgrace he has carried since the engagement began to break.
