Dmitri's Assault on Fyodor

Also known as flung him with a crash on the floor, kicked him two or three times, shedding your blood, knocked his father down, the scene at the dinner-table, the horrible scene of violence.

Dmitri bursts into Fyodor Pavlovitch's house looking for Grushenka and loses control when he thinks she may be hidden inside. After searching the rooms, he seizes his father by the hair, flings him to the floor, and kicks him before Ivan and Alyosha drag him back. The assault leaves Fyodor bloodied and terrified, and Dmitri runs out still threatening to return.

III-X. Both Together

Alyosha reports the whole scene at Katerina Ivanovna's house, making the violence part of the message Dmitri sends to his betrothed.

XII-II. Dangerous Witnesses

At the trial, Grigory's calm account of the dinner-table attack makes the earlier bloodshed sound ominous before the court.

XII-VII. An Historical Survey

The prosecutor folds the assault into his chronology, treating it as one visible step in Dmitri's mounting hatred of his father.
