Also known as Father Païssy, his reverence Father Païssy.
Father Paissy is one of the two hermitage monks present in Father Zossima's Cell when the visitors enter. He is described as learned, delicate in health, and not yet old. At first he stands inside the monastic order around Zossima, silent but serious.
II-V. So Be It! So Be It!
During Ivan's discussion of Church and State, Paissy speaks with fervor for the Church's universal vocation and sharply resists Miusov's Western comparisons.
III-XI. Another Reputation Ruined
He watches over Zossima's failing strength and tells Alyosha that the elder has blessed his work in the world rather than his retreat from it.
IV-I. Father Ferapont
After Zossima takes communion, Paissy exhorts Alyosha with a grave defense of Christian truth against the science and unbelief of the age.
VII-I. The Breath Of Corruption
He prepares Zossima's body, reads the Gospel, tries to restrain the crowd's impatient expectations, and confronts Father Ferapont when the coffin scandal breaks out.
VII-IV. Cana Of Galilee
He reads the Gospel alone beside Zossima's coffin while Alyosha dreams of Cana and rises from prayer renewed.
