Also known as Father Zossima’s cell, the elder's cell, the elder’s cell, the cell of the elder, Father Zossima’s bedroom.
Father Zossima's Cell is the private monastic room where Alyosha lives close to Father Zossima and waits on him. It is chosen as the place where the Karamazov family may meet under the elder's influence. Before any meeting takes place, it already carries the intimacy of discipleship and the pressure of public reverence.
II-II. The Old Buffoon
The room is shown in detail: small, faded, sparsely furnished, with shabby chairs, an old sofa, icons, a lamp, prints, and portraits.
II-VI. Why Is Such A Man Alive?
The cell becomes the stage for the family quarrel, Ivan's moral argument, Dmitri's rage, and Zossima's startling bow at Dmitri's feet.
III-XI. Another Reputation Ruined
Alyosha returns to the cell from town, prays there, and sleeps on his narrow sofa while waiting by the failing elder.
IV-I. Father Ferapont
The room fills with monks as Zossima gives final counsel, blesses his brothers, and sends Alyosha out to keep his promises.
VII-IV. Cana Of Galilee
After Zossima's death, his coffin stands in the cell while Father Paissy reads the Gospel and Alyosha dreams of Cana.
