Ilusha and Snegiryov at the Stone

Also known as our big stone, our stone, Ilusha's stone.

Ilusha and Snegiryov at the Stone is the private scene Captain Snegiryov describes to Alyosha in the open air. After the schoolboys repeat the insult against his father, Ilusha walks with him to their usual roadside stone and finally breaks down. Father and son cling to each other there, hidden from everyone except God, and the memory becomes the captain's proof of the child's wounded love.

X-VII. Ilusha

When Ilusha knows how ill he is, he asks to be buried by their big stone and imagines his father, Kolya, and Perezvon coming there in the evening. The old walking place becomes the place where he wants memory to stay.

Epilogue III. Ilusha’s Funeral. The Speech At The Stone

After Ilusha's funeral, Alyosha gathers the schoolboys at the stone and asks them never to forget Ilusha or one another. The private place of shame and tears becomes a shared place of remembrance.
