Ilusha first appears as the solitary schoolboy facing six others by the ditch on Mihailovsky Street. He is pale, undersized, badly dressed, and armed with stones in both pockets, but he refuses to yield to the boys across the bridge. When Alyosha approaches gently, the boy's defiance turns on him too, ending in the bite that leaves Alyosha's finger bleeding.
IV-VI. A Laceration In The Cottage
Alyosha finds that the boy is Captain Snegiryov's son, feverish in the family cottage and fiercely protective of his father. Ilusha admits biting Alyosha because Alyosha is a Karamazov and therefore kin to the man who humiliated his father.
IV-VII. And In The Open Air
The captain explains how Ilusha saw Dmitri drag him by the beard and begged for his father's forgiveness. The boys' wisp of tow taunt and the shame of that scene have made Ilusha's school quarrels a matter of wounded honor.
X-I. Kolya Krassotkin
It is now told that Ilusha once flew at Kolya Krassotkin in class and stabbed him with a penknife, again while defending his father against the schoolboys who jeered the wisp of tow nickname.
X-III. The Schoolboy
Two months after the stone fight, Ilusha lies dangerously ill at home and pines over the lost dog Zhutchka. The very schoolboys who once stoned him now ask anxiously after him, and his father hopes a new pup will comfort him.
X-IV. The Lost Dog
Kolya reveals that Ilusha's remorse over Zhutchka, his break with Kolya, and the penknife incident all fed the same suffering. By now Ilusha has been speaking of Kolya in fever and believes the dog episode is part of his illness.
X-V. By Ilusha’s Bedside
Ilusha is gravely ill in the corner under the icons, surrounded by boys whom Alyosha has reconciled with him. Kolya Krassotkin's entrance and the return of the dog bring him overwhelming joy.
X-VII. Ilusha
After the doctor's visit, Ilusha comforts his father instead of himself. He asks not to be forgotten, names the stone by their walk, and imagines his father, Kolya, and Perezvon coming to him there.
Epilogue III. Ilusha’s Funeral. The Speech At The Stone
Ilusha has died, and his funeral gathers the Snegiryovs, Alyosha, Kolya, and the schoolboys around his flower-decked coffin. At the stone, Alyosha's speech asks the boys to remember Ilusha as brave, kind, and dear for the rest of their lives.
