Ilusha's School

Also known as school, that school, the school, his class, class, the preparatory class, the classes, the whole school.

Ilusha's School is the world that turns Captain Snegiryov's public humiliation into a child's daily trial. The boys seize on the captain's beard and poverty, tease Ilusha, and make his father's shame the talk of the class. At this first horizon, the school is less an institution than a merciless crowd in which a proud small boy stands alone.

X-I. Kolya Krassotkin

Kolya's school reputation shows the same world from above: cleverness, pranks, Latin, punishments, and rank among boys all matter. Kolya Krassotkin has learned how to command this small society.

X-IV. The Lost Dog

Kolya explains that he first protected Ilusha in the preparatory class, then withdrew from him after the Zhutchka incident. The school's cruelty and Kolya's cold discipline together helped drive Ilusha into open conflict.

Epilogue III. Ilusha’s Funeral. The Speech At The Stone

At the funeral, the schoolboys remember that Ilusha once stood up for his father's honor against the whole school. Alyosha asks them to carry that memory as something better than their former cruelty.
