Ivan and Katerina's Break

Also known as Good-by, Katerina Ivanovna, I shall never see you again, I don’t want your hand, scene with her, first hour of freedom, released myself.

Ivan and Katerina's break is the drawing-room scene in which Ivan stops serving as the silent sufferer in Katerina Ivanovna's emotional drama. After Alyosha blurts out that she may be torturing Ivan because she loves him, Ivan speaks with sudden frankness and says she has used his love as revenge for Dmitri's insults. He refuses her hand, says good-by, and leaves Madame Hohlakov's house.

V-III. The Brothers Make Friends

At the Metropolis Tavern, Ivan tells Alyosha that his bond with Katerina ended that morning. He calls it his first hour of freedom, though he still speaks of her with excitement and injury.
