Ivan's Decision to Testify

Also known as Everything together to-morrow.

Ivan's decision to testify forms during his last interview with Smerdyakov. After hearing Smerdyakov's confession and taking the three thousand roubles, Ivan resolves to appear at the trial, name Smerdyakov, and expose his own moral responsibility. The decision is feverish but deliberate, and Ivan leaves repeating that everything will be told the next day.

XI-IX. The Devil. Ivan’s Nightmare

During Ivan's nightmare, the visitor mocks the resolution as prideful heroism, pressing Ivan on whether sacrifice can mean anything if he does not believe in virtue.

XI-X. “It Was He Who Said That”

After Smerdyakov's suicide, Alyosha understands that Ivan's proof has become much harder to establish, yet believes his brother will still go and give it.

XII-V. A Sudden Catastrophe

Ivan carries the resolution into the district court, produces the notes, and says Smerdyakov killed their father while he himself incited him. His illness turns the testimony into a courtroom crisis rather than a clear vindication.
