Person

Smurov

Also known as little Smurov, Clever little Smurov.

Smurov first appears among the boys by the bridge as the left-handed boy who throws stones back at the solitary schoolboy. He is part of the group, but he also warns Alyosha not to go too near. At this horizon, he is one of the schoolboys in the fight, distinct mainly by his left-handed throw and his readiness to speak up.

X-III. The Schoolboy

Smurov meets Kolya Krassotkin secretly and walks with him toward the Snegiryovs. He is younger, obedient, and plainly admiring, but he knows more than Kolya admits about the boys' visits to Ilusha.

X-IV. The Lost Dog

Kolya names Smurov as the intermediary who carried his messages during the quarrel with Ilusha. Smurov's obedience has made him part of both the punishment and the hoped-for reconciliation.

X-V. By Ilusha’s Bedside

Inside the cottage, Smurov helps manage the dog surprise and recognizes the success of Kolya's plan with delight. He stands close enough to share the boys' excitement without trying to command it.

Epilogue III. Ilusha’s Funeral. The Speech At The Stone

At the funeral, Smurov echoes Alyosha's answer about Dmitri and carries the captain's discarded hat through the snow while crying with the others.
