The Snegiryovs' Cottage Room

Also known as Captain Snegiryov's lodging.

The Snegiryovs' cottage room is the poor lodging across the passage in the decrepit Lake Street house. When Alyosha enters, he sees a crowded peasant room with beds, rags, a stove, a rough table, and the whole Snegiryov family compressed into one space. The room's poverty makes every exchange feel exposed.

IV-VII. And In The Open Air

The captain leaves the stuffy room to speak with Alyosha in the open air. Outside, the contrast makes his family's confinement and dependence even clearer.

X-V. By Ilusha’s Bedside

The room becomes Ilusha's sickroom, crowded with boys, family members, a puppy, and Kolya's dog Perezvon. The same poor interior is briefly animated by tricks, a little cannon, and anxious attempts to cheer the child.

X-VII. Ilusha

After the Moscow doctor gives his verdict in the passage, the room gathers into grief around Ilusha's bed. Nina, Arina Petrovna, the captain, Kolya, and Alyosha all register the news there.

Epilogue III. Ilusha’s Funeral. The Speech At The Stone

Ilusha's flower-decked coffin is carried out from the room, and the family later returns to his empty bed and patched little boots. The lodging becomes the place where absence is most visible.
