The Gypsies

Also known as the gypsy girls.

The Gypsies are the musicians and girls from Dmitri's earlier Mokroe spree, remembered as part of the money and revelry he scattered there. When he returns to Plastunov's Inn, he asks for them at once, but Trifon says the authorities have sent them away. Their absence makes the village chorus and local musicians the substitute entertainment for the night.

IX-VIII. The Evidence Of The Witnesses. The Babe

Trifon Borissovitch tells the officials that a large part of Dmitri's earlier spending went to the gypsy girls, making them part of the disputed three-thousand-rouble story.
