The Hermitage

Also known as the hermitage precincts, the precincts of the hermitage.

The Hermitage is the separate enclosure where Father Zossima lives, about four hundred paces from the main monastery across the copse. Its gates mark a stricter space: women do not enter the precinct, while rooms outside the portico allow ladies of rank to see the elder when he is able. The place is both austere and carefully tended, with flowers around the wooden house and tombs.

II-II. The Old Buffoon

The visitors enter from the hermitage precincts into Father Zossima's Cell, where the planned family meeting becomes visibly strained from the first bows.

II-VI. Why Is Such A Man Alive?

After Zossima bows at Dmitri's feet, the guests stream out through the hermitage precincts in confusion, carrying the scandal back toward the monastery dinner.

VII-I. The Breath Of Corruption

After Zossima's death, the hermitage fills with monks, townspeople, sick children, curiosity, expectation, and then scandal around his coffin.

VII-IV. Cana Of Galilee

Alyosha returns to the hermitage at night, prays by Zossima's coffin, and then goes out under the stars changed by the vigil.
