The Monastery

Also known as our monastery, our famous monastery, the famous monastery.

The Monastery is the famous religious house bordering Miusov's estate near Skotoprigonyevsk. At first it is tied to an endless lawsuit over local rights, but it already stands as a public force in the neighborhood, important enough for an enlightened landowner to attack as a citizen and a man of culture.

I-III. The Second Marriage And The Second Family

The monastery takes notice of Ivan's article on ecclesiastical courts, and Alyosha is introduced as a novice living there.

I-V. Elders

Its fame is explained through the Institution of Elders, especially through Father Zossima, whose counsel draws pilgrims from far away.

II-VI. Why Is Such A Man Alive?

The family meeting in Zossima's cell brings the Karamazov quarrel into the monastic precinct and leaves the community's reverent order badly strained.

IV-I. Father Ferapont

As Zossima weakens, the monks and visitors wait in suspense for his death and for signs of special grace.

VII-I. The Breath Of Corruption

After Zossima's body begins to give off the ordinary smell of corruption, the monastery is shaken by scandal, malice, and resistance to the elders.

VII-IV. Cana Of Galilee

Alyosha returns to the hermitage, prays beside Zossima's coffin, and leaves the monastery soon after in obedience to his elder's command.
