The Wisp of Tow Taunt

Also known as Wisp of tow, wisp of tow, a disheveled wisp of tow, my wisp of tow.

The Wisp of Tow Taunt is the phrase the boys urge Alyosha to repeat to the solitary schoolboy after the stone fight. Alyosha refuses because he senses that the words are part of the boys' persecution, though he does not yet know the wound behind them. At this horizon, the taunt is a clue: a childish nickname that carries more cruelty than its nonsense sound suggests.

IV-VI. A Laceration In The Cottage

In the Snegiryovs' room, the phrase attaches to Captain Snegiryov's scant light beard. The captain himself uses it with a mixture of shame, mockery, and defiance.

IV-VII. And In The Open Air

The captain explains that the schoolboys took up the nickname after Dmitri dragged him by the beard. Their taunting keeps the humiliation before Ilusha and helps harden his rage.

X-I. Kolya Krassotkin

Kolya's introduction confirms that the nickname circulated through the school as a way of mocking Ilusha's father. It belongs to the social cruelty that made Ilusha stand alone.

X-III. The Schoolboy

Smurov's account to Kolya folds the taunt into Ilusha's suffering and the boys' attempt to make amends. The phrase remains small in sound but heavy with the family's public shame.
