Person

Hugo Baskerville

Also known as the wicked Hugo, Hugo, old Hugo.

The wild, profane, and godless ancestor at the head of the Baskerville line, whose tale fills the old family manuscript. In the time of the Great Rebellion he seized a yeoman's daughter and carried her to the Hall; when she fled across the moor he swore his soul to the Powers of Evil and rode after her with his hounds, and was found that night dead beside her, his throat torn out by a great black beast. From his end the family dates its curse.

Chapter III. The Problem

He is named as the ancestor whom the black-sheep Rodger Baskerville was said to resemble exactly.

Chapter VIII. First Report of Dr. Watson

Stapleton leads the party across the moor to the dismal spot, two great fang-like standing stones, where the legend of the wicked Hugo is said to have had its origin.

Chapter XIII. Fixing the Nets

His authentic 1647 portrait hangs in the Hall gallery, a Cavalier in black velvet and lace whose face Holmes studies with the keenest interest.
