Place

Ilyinskoe

Ilyinskoe first appears as the village from which the priest writes to Fyodor Pavlovitch about a timber buyer. The place belongs to the practical world of roads, priests, timber, and bargaining around Tchermashnya. It sits near enough to Volovya Station to become a possible detour, but far enough to cost time and judgment.

VIII-I. Kuzma Samsonov

Samsonov's house sends Dmitri toward Ilyinskoe by naming the priest as the route to Lyagavy.

VIII-II. Lyagavy

Dmitri reaches Ilyinskoe only to learn that the priest has gone elsewhere and that Lyagavy is lodging still farther off at Suhoy Possyolok.
