Mitya's Prison Confession

Also known as A Hymn And A Secret, pour out my heart, I'll tell you our secret.

Mitya's prison confession is the trial-eve interview in which Dmitri pours out his heart to Alyosha. He speaks of a new man rising in him, of the poor babe from his dream, and of finding joy even underground in suffering. He then reveals Ivan's secret proposal for escape and asks Alyosha not to decide his conscience before the verdict.

Epilogue II. For A Moment The Lie Becomes Truth

In the hospital after the verdict, the ideals from this confession return in altered form as Dmitri admits he wanted to sing the hymn underground but is not strong enough to endure humiliation and blows.
