Widow Morozov's House

Also known as the house of the widow Morozov, the widow Morozov's house, the widow Morozov’s house, Fenya's kitchen, Fenya’s kitchen.

Grushenka lives in a small wooden lodge in the courtyard of Widow Morozov's house, in the busiest part of town near the cathedral square. The main house is large, stone, old, and ugly, occupied by the reclusive widow and her elderly nieces. The widow had taken Grushenka in four years earlier to please Kuzma Samsonov, but by now she seldom interferes with her lodger.

VIII-IV. In The Dark

Dmitri rushes back to the house after leaving his father's garden and learns from the porter that Grushenka has gone to Mokroe. The house becomes the place where his private panic turns toward pursuit.

VIII-V. A Sudden Resolution

In Fenya's kitchen, Dmitri forces the frightened servants to tell him where Grushenka has gone. Their answers send him toward Pyotr Ilyitch Perhotin, the pistols, and the road to Mokroe.

IX-I. The Beginning Of Perhotin’s Official Career

Perhotin returns to the same kitchen after midnight and questions Fenya. Her account of the pestle, the blood, and Dmitri's return pushes Perhotin to carry the alarm to the authorities.
