Zossima's Impending Death

Also known as the elder's death, his end was near, the moment of death, while he is alive.

Zossima's impending death is already present when the narrator explains the elders. The monastery is famous through him, but he is nearly spent with weakness and disease, and there is no clear successor. Devotees expect that his end may bring glory to the monastery, while Alyosha's faith in him burns especially bright.

II-VII. A Young Man Bent On A Career

After the scandal in the cell, Zossima tells Alyosha that his hours are numbered and sends him toward service in the world rather than shelter in the monastery.

IV-I. Father Ferapont

Zossima confesses, takes communion, receives extreme unction, and blesses the brothers gathered in his cell while Father Paissy watches over the moment gravely.

VI-III. Conversations And Exhortations Of Father Zossima

Zossima dies quietly in the hermitage after his final teachings, bowing toward the earth in prayer.

VII-I. The Breath Of Corruption

His body is prepared and laid in Father Zossima's Cell, where the expected glory gives way to scandal when the ordinary signs of corruption appear.
