Dmitri's Sudden Resolution

Also known as A Sudden Resolution, stepping aside, make way, step aside, make way for their happiness, I'm punishing myself, I’m punishing myself.

Dmitri's sudden resolution forms when Fenya tells him that Grushenka has gone to Mokroe to meet her former officer. His fury drops into a strange, gentle decision to make way for her and to punish himself. He leaves the kitchen speaking of a terrible fence and of stepping aside, then goes to Perhotin for his pistols.

VIII-VI. “I Am Coming, Too!”

On the road with Andrey, Dmitri explains the resolution as yielding Grushenka to her first love and refusing to crush another person's life. The language of making way becomes a prayer, a judgment on himself, and a promise to see her once more.

IX-V. The Third Ordeal

Under questioning, Dmitri says the resolution turned his thoughts toward suicide after the blood on Grigory and the return of Grushenka's former lover. He presents it as the reason he redeemed and loaded the pistols.
