The Father Superior

Also known as Father Superior, the Superior.

The Father Superior is the official head of The Monastery, distinct from Father Zossima's charismatic role as elder. Miusov uses a proposed visit to him as a polite pretext for entering the monastery and discussing the old lawsuit. His office represents the monastery's formal hospitality and order.

II-I. They Arrive At The Monastery

He invites the visitors to dine after their audience in Father Zossima's Cell.

II-VII. A Young Man Bent On A Career

The expected meal at his table is overshadowed by the visitors' quarrels and the scandal that follows them out of the elder's cell.

When Fyodor Pavlovitch insults the monks at dinner, the Father Superior answers with humility rather than open retaliation.

He appears in reports about Father Ferapont, who claims to have seen devils at the Superior's.
