Ilusha's Funeral

Also known as how we buried Ilusha, how we buried the poor boy.

Ilusha's funeral is the final gathering around Ilusha, who has died two days after Dmitri's guilty verdict. Alyosha, Kolya, and the schoolboys accompany the flower-decked coffin while Captain Snegiryov moves between bewildered tenderness and frantic grief. The service, burial, bread crumbs for sparrows, and broken flowers turn the family's poverty and the boys' affection into a public act of remembrance.

Epilogue III. Ilusha’s Funeral. The Speech At The Stone

After the burial at Ilusha's grave, the procession passes the stone where Ilusha once wanted to be buried. That pause leads directly into Alyosha's speech at the stone.

Epilogue III. Ilusha’s Funeral. The Speech At The Stone

The boys and Alyosha then return toward Ilusha's funeral dinner, carrying the memory of the coffin, the father's grief, and the compact made at the stone.
