The Meeting at Zossima's Cell

Also known as the interview with the elder, the visit to the hermitage, their visit to the hermitage, the proposed visit.

The meeting at Zossima's cell is planned as a family interview under the elder's calming influence. Fyodor Pavlovitch, Dmitri, Ivan, Alyosha, and Miusov are drawn into it for different reasons, few of them pure. Before it begins, Alyosha fears that the visit may expose the elder to insult rather than reconcile the family.

II-I. They Arrive At The Monastery

The guests arrive awkwardly at the monastery and pass into The Hermitage, already irritated by etiquette, delay, and Fyodor Pavlovitch's jokes.

II-II. The Old Buffoon

Inside Father Zossima's Cell, the formal audience begins with strained bows, missed blessings, and Fyodor Pavlovitch's performance as an old buffoon.

II-VI. Why Is Such A Man Alive?

When Dmitri arrives, the meeting becomes the Zossima cell scandal: money, jealousy, family shame, and Ivan's ideas all come into the open before the monks.
